Nominations to the Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care Board of the American Board of Surgery

Apr. 18, 2023 Media Contact: Alyson Maloney, 215-568-4000

The Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care Board (TBSCCB) of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) is seeking director nominees to serve a six-year term beginning September 11, 2023. The TBSCCB is comprised of approximately 12 members who represent the spectrum of trauma, burns and surgical critical care surgical practice, and is responsible for both initial and continued board certification in surgical critical care. Accordingly, the TBSCCB is responsible for the Surgical Critical Care Surgery Certifying Examination (CE) and the Surgical Critical Care Continuous Certification Assessment (CCA).

The TBSCCB's current major priorities include the development of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for surgical critical care and incorporating the recently revised examination blueprint. It is expected that directors will assume active roles in one of the TBSCCB examination committees or those dedicated to EPAs and the blueprint.

Directors must be currently certified by the ABS in surgical critical care. The time commitment is approximately eight (8) days per year including examination reviews and board meetings (virtual and in-person), in addition to the various committee responsibilities.

In addition to commitment, availability, the ability to work collaboratively and keep confidence, the TBSCCB utilizes a competency-based selection process to optimize its performance. Accordingly, individuals with one or more of the following competencies are sought:

  • Non-academic practice including community, rural, military settings
  • Primary practice of burn surgery
  • Experience as a surgical critical care fellowship program director
  • Experience with the development and/or implementation of Entrustable Professional Activities (competency-based assessment of trainees)
  • RRC/ACGME experience
  • SCORE experience
  • Prior service to the ABS or TBSCCB

Emphasis will be placed on elements of diversity across all dimensions, including race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age or other elements that bring a different voice to the organization.

Nominations will be accepted from societies, peers, or self-nomination. All nominations will require completion of the Nominate/Support Form from an ABMS-certified physician. Both the nominator and nominee forms must be completed for each candidate by 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 31, 2023. Please use the links below to access the nominator and nominee forms:
