The Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) has released a Patient Care Curriculum Outline for general surgery residency, marking the first step in the development of a new curriculum for general surgery training in the U.S. The curriculum outline is being distributed this week at the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) annual meeting.
The Patient Care Curriculum Outline contains a listing of patient care topics to be included in a curriculum for a five-year general surgical residency training program. In addition, it specifies in general terms the depth and breadth of training that is expected for each. This outline has been approved as the basis for a full patient care curriculum currently under development by SCORE and the American Board of Surgery.

For additional information on SCORE, see recent issues of the ABS newsletter or visit www.surgicalcore.org. SCORE is composed of representatives from the principal organizations involved in U.S. surgical education - the ABS, APDS, American College of Surgeons, American Surgical Association, Association for Surgical Education, and Residency Review Committee for Surgery (ACGME).
The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge. The ABS certifies surgeons in the following fields: general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. The ABS is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
