In observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2023, the ABS office is closed.

This is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage Americans to give back, volunteer and improve their communities.

During the last quarter-century, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact has increased as more people have embraced the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving our communities.

ABS Chief Diversity Equity and Inclusion Officer Ada Okafor encourages people to think creatively about ways to participate in MLK Day of Service. She suggests:

  • Engaging with your community to create constructive action;
  • Acting on Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and equity; and
  • Volunteering to clean up a public space, mentoring young people, attending an education event, or helping those who are food insecure.

No matter how you choose to engage on MLK Day of Service, "together we can make a difference and strengthen our communities," said ABS President and CEO Dr. Jo Buyske.
