ABS Position Paper on IOM Resident Hours Report

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) drafted the following position paper in spring 2009 as a response to the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) December 2008 report, "Resident Duty Hours: Enhancing Sleep, Supervision and Safety," which recommended new restrictions on resident work hours. The ABS presented this paper at a symposium held by the ACGME on June 11-12, 2009, to examine the IOM's recommendations.
This paper has been endorsed by all of the surgical specialty boards which are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

About the ABS
The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge. The ABS certifies surgeons in the following fields: general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. The ABS is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
