Update Regarding Hurricanes Irma and Harvey

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) has been alerted by Pearson VUE and Prometric testing services that many testing centers in Florida, Georgia and the Caribbean have been forced to close. We are contacting the affected examinees and will be working with the testing companies to arrange alternative exam dates. Examinees will be notified once the damage is assessed and date and site options are determined.
Surgeons whose ability to take an ABS examination has been significantly affected in other ways should notify the ABS office at 215-568-4000 or abscomms@absurgery.org as soon as possible so arrangements can be made as needed.

The American Board of Surgery expresses our deepest concern for the extreme impact Hurricane Harvey has had on the lives of the people of Texas, including our diplomates (ABS-certified surgeons) and candidates.
While Pearson VUE has confirmed that testing centers in the Houston area are all operational, surgeons whose ability to take an ABS examination has been significantly affected by Hurricane Harvey should notify the ABS office at 215-568-4000 or abscomms@absurgery.org as soon as possible so alternative arrangements can be made if necessary.
The ABS is proud of the many ABS diplomates who bravely provided care to patients during the storm and continue to do so in its aftermath. We encourage all to consider donating to a charity of your choice to assist those affected. The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of surgical training following medical school and successfully completed a written and oral examination process administered by the ABS. They must then maintain their board certification through ongoing learning and practice improvement activities.
The ABS offers board certification in general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, complex general surgical oncology, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. It is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
