The American Board of Surgery (ABS), the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists, is pleased to welcome Dr. M. Ashraf Mansour as chair for 2023-2024.
Nominated to the ABS by the American Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery in 2016, Dr. Mansour served on the previous ABS Board of Directors (now the ABS Council) until 2019 when he was elected to serve as a director on the new governing board of the ABS.
When asked about his new role as chair, Dr. Mansour explained, "It is a great honor to serve as the American Board of Surgery chair this year. I am very proud of all the accomplishments of the Board since I joined in 2016, from governance redesign to leading by example on diversity, equity, and inclusion."
Dr. Mansour is the chief of vascular surgery at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI, and professor of surgery at Michigan State University. Born in Cairo, Egypt, he attended medical school at the Cairo University School of Medicine. After completing a general surgery residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Dr. Mansour served in the United States Army Medical Corps. He then completed a vascular surgery fellowship at Southern Illinois University in Springfield. His current practice focuses on vascular and endovascular surgery, in addition to surgical critical care.
"Despite huge challenges, not the least of which was a global pandemic, the American Board of Surgery continued to function and adapt to the changing environment. The ABS work has not stopped, including administering in-training, qualifying, and certifying exams and changing the format of the continuous certification examination," added Mansour. "Achieving board certification is a milestone in every surgeon's career. Being a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery tells the public that this surgeon has successfully completed surgical training and went through a rigorous certification process."
Dr. Mansour previously served as vice chair of the Vascular Surgery Board of the ABS (VSB-ABS) from 2018-2019. He has held leadership positions in many surgical organizations and is a past president of both the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society and the Western Surgical Association. He is currently the president for both the Midwest Surgical Association and the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery. Dr Mansour has been an author and co-author of many publications and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Amy J. Goldberg has been elected to serve as vice chair of the ABS for the 2023-2024 term, succeeding Dr. M. Ashraf Mansour. Dr. Goldberg has served on the ABS Board of Directors (now the ABS Council) since 2018 when she was nominated to the ABS by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
Dr. Goldberg is The Marjorie Joy Katz Dean of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and the George S. Peters, MD and Louise C. Peters Chair, professor of surgery at Temple University.
She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She then completed general surgery residency training at Temple University Hospital followed by a fellowship in traumatology and critical care at the University of Maryland, Shock Trauma Center.
Dr. Goldberg is a nationally celebrated trauma surgeon, educator, and violence-prevention innovator, devoting 30 plus years to medical education, clinical practice, and community service. Her research has focused on penetrating trauma injuries and the impact of gun violence prevention and intervention programs. Goldberg also serves as co-lead in the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Health Systems Implementation Initiative (HSII) to accelerate the uptake of practice-changing research results in clinical care to improve quality and patient outcomes.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, she was designated Master Surgeon Educator in 2021. Her publications have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Annals of Surgery, and The American Journal of Surgery, and she is an editorial board member of the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
"I am excited and humbled to be elected to serve as Vice Chair of the American Board of Surgery," said Dr. Goldberg. "I look forward to working even more closely with my esteemed colleagues to continually improve surgical training and lifelong learning."
