Item-Writing Workshops at ACS Clinical Congress

Oct. 18, 2019 Media Contact: Alyson Maloney , 215-568-4000

The American Board of Surgery will be hosting two Item-Writing Workshops on at the ACS Clinical Congress October 27, 2019 in San Francisco, CA. All ABS diplomates attending the ACS Clinical Congress 2019 or who reside in the San Francisco area are invited to participate.

The sessions will be held from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., both in the Yorkshire Room at the Westin St. Francis (335 Powell Street, San Francisco, California 94102). The workshops are identical, so please only register for one.

Both new and experienced item writers are welcome at this workshop in order to learn (or brush up on) the basic principles of writing multiple-choice questions for a secure exam or for an open-book educational assessment in the Continuous Certification Program.

You do not need to be a current member of an ABS exam committee to attend. Participation in the workshop will be viewed favorably when ABS recruits new item writers, but it is by no means required in order to be considered.

Topics include:

  • The basics of successful item writing for multiple-choice questions
  • How to avoid flaws and improve your work
  • Psychometrics: item analysis
  • Practical exercises in item review
  • Key differences in writing for closed-book vs open-book assessments
