The American Board of Surgery (ABS), the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists, is pleased to welcome Dr. Amit R.T. Joshi as editor-in-chief for the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE®).
Dr. Joshi is the associate dean for graduate medical education and a professor of surgery at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, NJ, as well as a general surgeon at Cooper University Health System. Following medical school at Brown University, Dr. Joshi completed his residency training at New York Presbyterian/Cornell, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at North Shore/Long Island Jewish Hospitals. His research and clinical interests include general surgery, minimally invasive hernia surgery, and surgical education.
Dr. Joshi is currently a director on the ABS Board of Directors, and in this capacity, also serves on the ABS Audit Committee. He has been part of the SCORE leadership team since 2015, and served as the associate editor of SCORE from 2019-2021. Dr. Joshi succeeds Dr. Mary Klingensmith as SCORE's editor-in-chief, as she moves on to an exciting new role with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Dr. Joshi's passion for surgical education stems from his desire to leave a legacy in surgery for the future. "I enjoy great satisfaction in seeing my students and mentees grow professionally and personally," he said. "I love it when a resident learns how to do an operation better than I can!"
In his vision for the future of SCORE, Dr. Joshi hopes to make the platform even more user-friendly and valuable for trainees and program directors across multiple surgical specialties. His ultimate goal is to help every institution or organization that he works with become better at what they do and align with their mission or vision through the SCORE platform.
Dr. Joshi currently serves on the board of directors and as a member of the executive committee for the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS), in addition to helping to launch their Educational Quality Improvement Program (EQIP). He is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), a past-president of the Philadelphia chapter of the ACS, and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Surgical Education.
In his free time, Dr. Joshi enjoys traveling with his family, listening to classical music, and spending time outdoors running, playing tennis, and gardening.
